This workshop aims to introduce you to the basics of handweaving on a frame loom with a focus on rug making techniques. You will learn how to set up the frame loom. You will explore traditional rug making techniques such as Rya Knots and Soumak Stitch to create raised surface decoration in your weaving, as well as handweaving in plain weave pattern. Using these techniques, you will design and create your own contemporary woven wall hanging or upholstery cloth (to make into a cushion at home).
You will cover:
- Dressing the loom
- how to handweave in plain weave pattern
- Rya knots
- Soumak stitch
- fringing and how to take your piece off the loom
Your frame loom is included along with your workshop place. You will be working with a beautiful selection of wools and other fibre yarns. If you already have a frame loom which you would like to bring along please let us know so we can reduce the cost of the workshop. All materials are provided. This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some weave experience who wish to explore further.
Fiona Daly is a contemporary textile designer maker and handweaver based in South London.
Fiona creates bespoke handwoven textiles using natural, undyed, local wool for homewares. She specialises in shaft weaving using her manual Dobby loom. Her work is inspired by patterns found in traditional Shetland textiles, a love of wool and sustainability, a fascination with exploring weave structures and the story of different sheep breeds. She also combines her handwoven cloth with her screen-printed sheep illustrations. She is strongly influenced by her time spent in the Shetland Islands and continues to use natural Shetland wool sourced direct from the islands.
